The music faculty at St John’s is exceptional. As we are a Technology, Language and Arts College music forms a central part of the school ethos. With a St John’s Choir, the Academy also has a Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Rock Groups and an Orchestra as well as many student led groups. We are one of very few schools that offers ‘A’ Level Music and Music Technology. St John’s has termly music evenings and competitions for the prestigious Savernake and Stedman Music Cups, as well as evening and lunchtime concerts.
Tuition on all instruments is available through the St John’s tuition scheme. Lessons are given during school hours (making maximum use of breaks and lunchtime) and are organised on a rota basis so that students do not miss the same lesson each week. Students are responsible for undertaking to make up work missed. Students have the opportunity to take ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool examinations in all instruments.
The faculty runs a number of instrumental groups, several of which are taken by instrumental staff. All players are encouraged to take part in a group which is most suitable for their standard of performance. Further information can be obtained from the Director of Music.
Sport at St John’s
Sport is a vital part of St John’s with an outstanding quality of sports education. In addition to a full programme of physical education lessons, practices are held at lunchtime and at the end of day for Rugby, Football, Netball, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Rounders, Hockey and Basketball.
We regularly compete against other schools. Academic studies in Physical Education (GCSE) and Sports Studies and PE (Advanced Level) are extremely popular.
Sports facilities include five grass pitches, six tennis/netball courts, a well-equipped large Sports Hall and a Dance Studio.
Information and Communication Technology
St John’s has five full ICT suites and a large Enterprise Centre with 60 computers. The facilities are at the leading edge and students are encouraged to make full use of these before, during and beyond the timetabled day.
St John’s has two libraries; the Atrium Library which is open 08:00 – 17:30 (16:00 on Fridays) and the Sixth Form Library open 08.30 – 16:00. In addition to the book collections the libraries carry newspapers, magazines, journals and DVDs. Revision guides and stationery are also available to buy. Staff are available at all times to help students with their research.
The St John’s restaurant is open during break time and lunchtime and provides a range of hot and cold meals and snacks.
