Thomas HolmesThomas Holmes has had an incredible athletics season and has continued to improve on his personal best performance in the event of Javelin. Thomas is trained by one of the leading coaches Mark Braford in Andover. Thomas was recently selected to attend a training camp in Finland to be coached by the world’s best javelin coaches. This led on to the English Schools Track and Field Championships which is one of the pinnacle competitions in the athletics season. Below is a wonderful letter written by Lucy Edwards a Wiltshire Team Manger that witnessed Thomas’s success at the championships.

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Thomas Holmes year 9, whom I had the pleasure of team managing at the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Birmingham over the past couple of days.
Thomas is one of those rare finds.  His performance on Friday was astonishing.  He won the Junior Boys Javelin event with a remarkable throw of 53.42m, a PB and National Standard, in a hugely competitive field of 23 athletes of whom 8 threw National Standards and 8 Entry standards.  His maturity, self-confidence and self-belief were extraordinary and he remained calm and focused throughout.  I was mesmerised watching him during his preparation.  His warm up and drills were faultless and beautifully executed, yet he found time to talk to me about his love of athletics and the benefits of his recent trip to Finland.
(Incidentally, the knowledge gleaned from this trip added 2m onto his throw, the difference between 4th and 1st place! Thanks for giving him the time off to attend, it made a difference).  Thomas Holmes on the winner's podiumHis in depth knowledge of his event and his competitors was remarkable and his belief that he would triumph was reassuring.  I walked up to the team and told them Thomas would win before the javelin event had even started, he knew it and I did.  He was gracious in victory and on returning to the stands, to be with his team mates, he put his medal away and turned his attention to supporting the Wiltshire Team.  I could not have been more proud of him and impressed by his attitude, behaviour, manners, team spirit and inner confidence.

Thomas is a truly remarkable young man and is a credit to your school and Wiltshire Athletics. Please pass on my congratulations to him on a job brilliantly done and also to his PE Department and those staff who have supported and inspiring him and allowed him to take part in athletics.”
