AS and A Level Music
What does the course involve?
AS LEVEL
- Performing 1 or 2 solo pieces (15%).
- Performing during the year of the course (15%).
- Developing Musical Ideas 2 composing/theory exercises (15%).
- Students’ own composition (15%).
- Listening and Understanding listening/aural questions based on extracts of music on CD (15%),
- Written questions based on 2 chosen areas of study (25%).
A2 LEVEL
The above AS units account for 50% of the full A2 award, plus the following:- Options performing recital or composing folio (15%).
- Performing and Composing Theory exercise exam (7 ½ %).
- Performing during the year of the course (7 ½ %).
- Analysing Music listening/aural questions based on extracts of music on CD (7 ½ %).
- Written questions based on 2 chosen areas of study (12 ½ %) (one extended from As level).
Students will also get the chance to tackle key skills related tasks which will help in the collection of evidence for the Key skills Qualification (KsQ).
What exams and coursework are involved?
- Coursework includes: performing during the course, composing and composing/theory exercises.
- Solo performing and recitals are assessed by an external examiner.
- Written exams are set for the listening/aural paper and for areas of study.
What are the entry qualifications?
- GCSE Music Grades A, B or C would probably be the usual entry qualification, but students with Associated Board passes at Grades 6, 7 or 8 and who therefore have also passed Grade 5 Theory, would also be eligible.
- GCSE Music is not essential.
What could I do after completing the course?
- A level Music enhances your understanding and ability to apply successfully to universities, Colleges, Academies and Music schools. By combining it with other Arts subjects you could go on to achieve degree qualifications in Arts related areas, teaching or leisure work.
- A level Music will broaden your background and skills ready for a professional music career.
